MOT SA Voices of Courage – Celebrating Youth on June 16

This Youth Day, we gathered once again for Voices of Courage—a special day hosted by MOT South Africa in partnership with the City of Cape Town. It was more than just an event. It was a reminder of what’s possible when young people, educators, and community leaders come together with purpose, passion, and courage.

This year’s theme was The Courage to Take Opportunities—and that message came through in every story, performance, and conversation shared.

A Message of Courage from the Deputy Mayor’s Office

Members of the Junior City Council (JCC)

Gavin Joachims, representing the Office of the Deputy Mayor, kicked things off by speaking about the Courage to Take Opportunities. He reminded us that courage doesn’t always show up as loud or bold—it can be quiet and personal, like saying yes to something that scares you, or putting your hand up even when you’re unsure.

The Junior City Council Mayor: Say YES

The Junior Mayor of the Junior City Council (JCC), Michael Daniel Bam, brought home the message of the Courage to Say Yes to Opportunities. It was a powerful moment—he encouraged young people to take that first step, to try, to trust themselves. Saying yes doesn’t mean you have all the answers—it just means you’re willing to grow.

A Joyful Sound: Sibelius High School Marimba Band

And then came the music! The marimba jam by learners from Sibelius High School had everyone smiling, clapping, and moving to the beat. It was more than just a performance—it was a celebration of youth, talent, and what happens when we make space for young people to shine.

Vusumzi Mpofu: Staying Consistent and Courageous

Vusumzi Mpofu during his performance

Vusumzi Mpofu reminded us of something we often forget: courage also lives in consistency. He spoke beautifully about the Courage to Be Consistent, and his two poems were raw, moving, and deeply inspiring. His words stayed with many of us long after he left the stage.

Leaving with Courage

Voices of Courage isn’t just about the big moments on stage—it’s about what happens afterward. It’s about each young person walking away feeling just a little more seen, a little more brave, and a little more ready to say yes to the next opportunity that comes their way.

Because that’s where real change starts—with the courage to try.
